The city of Zhuhai has a humanitarian organ donation rate in excess of 10 donors per million population (pmp), well above the 6.5 pmp of Guangdong Province and 4.6 of China, reports Jia Yingbin, director of the Office of Organ Procurement Organization at the 5th Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.
On June 11, the hospital publicized information about the organ donations as a female resident surnamed Liang registered on site as a volunteer donor. Also announced were Love & Hope Organ Volunteer Donor Registration and website of the China Organ Donation Administrative Center. The occasion was the fourth Organ Donation Theme Day organized by the China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation.
In 2016, the hospital approved organ transplants with the support of the Municipal People’s Government, provincial and municipal health authorities, and Red Cross societies, as well as Sun Yat-sen University. Zhuhai's first organ transplant was made from a deceased donor in May the same year.
The OPO office of the 5th Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is the only one of its kind in Zhuhai. It has contacted families of more than 200 potential organ donors and handled 47 donations and transplantations since 2016.
The hospital became qualified for liver, kidney, and lung transplants in January 2019 and has so far has conducted 53 such operations. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has not interfered. More than 50 medical staff cooperated to transplant the liver, and a pair of kidneys and corneas of donor Peng Xiaotong to three patients on March 25.
